Colonization

The New England Colonies, named by captain John Smith, were settled in 1614. Colonized by the Pilgrims and Puritans originally from England, the area of land now makes up the states that are today known as Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. This was the first sect of land settled when the Europeans came to the Americas. Unions had already been formed by the year 1643, in effort to keep strong against Pequot Indians, also coming in as a strong millitary strength for the new colony. Fishing and lumber became the two means of work for those living in this new land, being that the soil was poor and rocky - not good for growing crops. The selling of slaves also came into play around the time of this colonization.
